Description

Signal policies have replaced alert rules in SOTI MobiControl 2025.0.0 and later. They offer a more robust method to detect and respond to device changes in the SOTI MobiControl system. Users can create customized conditions for monitoring their SOTI MobiControl environment and trigger automated actions when meeting those conditions.

The following is an example of an alert rule from a previous SOTI MobiControl user interface. Alert rules are accessible by selecting Alerts within the Policies section.

Signal policies are accessible within the Policies section by selecting Signal.

SOTI MobiControl has migrated the most frequently used alerts to Signal policies as of SOTI MobiControl 15.6, and with SOTI MobiControl 2025.0.0, the rest have been phased out. We recommend that SOTI MobiControl administrators replace existing alert rules with signal policies to ensure a seamless transition.

Here are some answers to the main changes that will occur when converting Alert rules to Signal policies:

How will Alerts with no actions configured on the legacy side be translated into Signal?

  • In this case, a 'Trigger Alert' will always be the default action for a converted policy. The alert title and message will be %TRIGGERCONDITION% and %SOURCENAME% macro, respectively, to approximate how they were handled with the legacy alert.

What would happen if there were two conditions configured in legacy alerts - one supported in Signal and one not?

  • The entire conversion will fail.

What would happen if a legacy alert configured an operator that is not supported in Signal, but the condition is supported?

  • The conversion will fail with the "Unsupported Operator for %PropertyName%" message.

What will be the status of the successfully converted alert to Signal?

  • The default status of the successfully converted policy will be 'Disabled' status.

Legacy allows the same policy name to be created under different platforms. How does Signal handle the scenario of duplicate policy names?

  • The name of the platform will be added to the policy name at the beginning. (E.g., "Apple - Alert Rule Name").

Does the logic of device group selection & count the same as in Legacy Alert?

  • The device group selection is the same. The logic of counting the device group for excluded & included is an add-on feature in Signal, which should work as designed after conversion for the legacy alerts.

What will happen if the macro name differs between Legacy Alert & Signal? Will it still be mapped with Signal macro naming and resolved?

  • Macros will be mapped to their equivalents in Signal, e.g. %ALERT% -> %TRIGGERCONDITION%.

What happens if the macro selected & configured on legacy is not supported on Signal?

For example, Legacy has the following macros that are not supported in Signal: Locate, Alert, Timezone, Date, and Time.

* Note: Signal supports the 'Time Stamp' macro, which displays Date-Time-Timezone.

  • Signal does have a direct equivalent of most macros in legacy:
    • Alert -> Trigger Condition
    • Source -> Source Name
    • Locate -> Device Group Path
    • Date -> Time Stamp
    • Time -> Time Stamp
    • Time Zone -> Time Stamp
    • Hardware Device Serial Number -> Hardware Serial Number
    • ICCID -> ICCID

These will be mapped to each other.

If a Legacy Alert policy is configured with DSAI support and includes a 'Send Script' action, will it, after a successful conversion, automatically select the Device Initiated 'Send Script' option by default?

  • If Signal supports DSAI for the selected conditions, it will be selected by default in the converted alert.

In the Evaluation tab on Legacy Alerts, users get an option to configure evaluation settings as shown below:

  • Once with an option to select 'On' & 'at' i.e. time
  • Weekly with an option to choose any day 'Every' & 'at,' i.e. time
  • Periodically with an option to select duration 'Every' and Starting date & time

How will this change in Signal?

For these evaluation setting options when converting to Signal Policies, the following will happen:

    • Once: Device side evaluation will be disabled
    • Weekly: Device side evaluation will be enabled at the weekly schedule
    • Periodically: this field will be mapped to the device-side evaluation schedule. As in Signal, there is a limit of 2 weeks. Any period longer than two weeks will be mapped to 2 weeks

Note: Policies with 'Once' configurations will successfully convert. However, their schedule will not be brought with them. Therefore, the device-side evaluation would be disabled on the policy.

What will happen if the attribute is supported on legacy UI, but Signal does not support that respective platform? For example, the WiFi Access Point MAC Address (BSSID)

  • The conversion is expected to be successful if the selected device family is supported and the specified conditions are supported in Signal. Condition/Device family support will not be cross-checked.
