SOTI Surf Package vs MGP

Hi,

Does anyone have a preference on whether SOTI Surf is deployed via Package or Managed Google Playstore?

Interestingly, SOTI Surf does not appear to update as per the MGP update policy when deployed via a package, even though this is not the case for other applications such as the MC agent.

Thanks
Adam

As .pcg package is deployed directly from MobiControl server under MDM administrator control, using it is often desirable compared to using MGP, which might have different issues that delay deployment.

Of course, each new versions of .pcg (assoicated with a new .apk upgrade) should be prepared and uploaded to the MDM server by the administrator, and only appropriate app deployment policy/policies and device/device-group targets should be manually configured to get the required upgrade.

If there is an APK and/or pre-built Package available I always prefer that to Managed Play. Direct APK installation through Packages have less technical overhead, have increased version and installation control, offer better rollback capabilities, and are generally much more predictable than Managed Play.

Hi Matt,

One quick question, youve mentioned version control of the packages here. There's version control once the package is uploaded in MobiControl, i.e. I can revoke version2 and reapply Version1.

Is there version control MC Package Studio? I can alter the version here but I dont see how to see scripts/resources from a previous build version.

Additionaly, I can I download a package (.pcg) file from MobiControl. But is there any way of getting opening this in package studio? Lets say someone uploaded a package to MC and left the business, is there any way to reverse engineer to see what the package does?

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

AFAIK, yes reverse monitoring the pcg file should be possible. If you have the .pcg file with you, you can directly open it on "Mobicontrol Package Studio" program and see it's configuration and which .apk it consists of. Otherwise, even if you don't have the.pcg file with you (in addition to Mobicontrol webconsole), you can export the .pcg file from Mobicontrol Webconsole and do the same. You can contact Support team for details (how to export it from MC) or create another topic here on SOTI Pulse. I hope it helps. Thank you.

Hi Zafer,

Maybe I am making a mistake somewhere, but downloaded from MC webconsole I get a .pcg file.

I am using package studio v15.6.0.15 and unable to open a .pcg file, it only opens .mcp files.#

Thanks Adam
