Unenrolled devices still consumed licenses?

We noticed that unenrolled devices still consumed licenses unless we deleted them. That's the only time it releases the licenses.

We are planning to implement a business rule where we can retain information/attributes (custom attributes/notes) set on the devices for inventory/historical information purposes. For example, stolen/lost devices, we want to retain them in the system by unenrolling them.

Any suggestions to accomplish similar output would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

If someone knows about that, it would be nice to know even for us...

...but because of that reason we delete such devices entirely from the console and maintain "inventory" outside of Mobicontrol to free up the licenses.

Hi Reynold,

What are the version and build numbers of the MobiControl server you are using?'

What  was the device platform and enrollment mode of the device you unenrolled in your tests?

Your negative test result was maybe due to the procedure you took to unenroll your device.

Did you unenroll the device via web console "unenroll" device action when the device was powered up and on-line? Or when the device was powered off or off-line?

Hi Raymond

Thanks for the reply.
MobiControl server version: 15.6.0.1018
Device Platform: Android
Enrollment mode of unenrolled devices: Android Enterprise

Most of the time, devices are offline at the moment when they are unenrolled via web console using "unenroll" on device action.

HI Reynold,

You can do the following test.  If your device unenrolled via web-console "unenroll" device action has not be factory reset, you can power it up and the device agent on such device will try to talk to the server and get notified that it has been enrolled and show the prompt for a new enrollment ID/URL.  Your web console should then have one license freed up, though the device icon still remain, but the status of "Device Mode" field in the device-details tab will show "Unenrolled By Admin".

Alternatively, If an enrolled device is on-line while you initiate the "unenroll" device action,  a device license will be freed up immediately and the device screen should prompt for a new enrollment ID/URL right away.
