Issue Description

In affected versions, when Install Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is selected in the installer, the SOTI MobiControl installer attempts to download SQL Server 2022 Express from a Microsoft download location that is no longer available.

As a result, the automatic installation of SQL Server 2022 Express fails, preventing the SOTI MobiControl installation from being completed.

Environment

This issue affects new SOTI MobiControl installations where the installer is used to install Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Express automatically.

Deployments that use an existing SQL Server instance are not affected.

Affected Versions

The issue has been identified in the following SOTI MobiControl versions:

  • 2025.0.x
  • 2025.1.x
  • 2026.0.x
  • 2026.1.x

Symptoms

Customers may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • The SOTI MobiControl installation fails during the SQL Server installation phase.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Express is not installed automatically.
  • The installation process stops before SOTI MobiControl setup can be completed.
  • New deployments that rely on the bundled SQL Server 2022 Express installation cannot be completed successfully.

Cause

When Install Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is selected, the SOTI MobiControl installer attempts to download and install Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Express as part of the installation process.

Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2022

The Microsoft download location referenced by the installer is no longer available. As a result, SQL Server 2022 Express cannot be downloaded, causing the SQL installation to fail and preventing the SOTI MobiControl installation from completing.

This issue affects only the SQL Server 2022 Express installation process and does not indicate a problem with the SOTI MobiControl application installation itself.

Workarounds

Since SOTI MobiControl 2025.x.x and 2026.x.x support Microsoft SQL Server 2025, download and install Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Express instead using the steps below.

Step 1: Download Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Express

Download Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Express directly from Microsoft's official download page: Microsoft SQL Server Downloads

Step 2: Install Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Express

Install SQL Server 2025 Express before running the SOTI MobiControl installer.

Verify that:

  • The SQL Server service is running.
  • The SQL Server instance is accessible from the SOTI MobiControl server.
  • Appropriate SQL Server permissions have been configured.

Step 3: Install SOTI MobiControl

Run the SOTI MobiControl installer and configure it to use the existing SQL Server 2025 Express instance that was installed manually.

Step 4: Verify the Installation

After installation:

  • Confirm that the SQL Server 2025 Express instance is operational.
  • Confirm that SOTI MobiControl can connect to the SQL Server instance.
  • Verify that all SOTI MobiControl services start successfully.
