Recommended workflow to remove Android Enterprise device from Mobicontrol

Hello, I just wanted to confirm the best way to remove a device fully from Mobicontrol if enrolled as Android Enterprise (using afw#).

We have tried:

  • Wipe the device in Mobicontrol console
  • Delete the device from Mobicontrol

However some of the devices have reappeared after being booted. We think this may have been due to the devices being off/offline when the commands were sent. Would the above process be best if the devices are turned on at the time?

Deleting a device via web-console should always succeed, resulting in the device icon being removed, irrespective of whether the targeted device is on-line or not while the delete action is performed.     Occasionally,  outdated  Mobicontrol search cache data may cause the icon of the DEELETED device still visible on the web console devices tab,  which can be fixed by re-syncing/flushing the Mobicontrol search cache in the "Global Settings" tab.   Deleting without first wiping the device will leave the on-line device agent on the device knowing about its unenrolled state and prompting device end-user for a new enrollment ID/URL.   It is still possible to go to device's Settings and initiate device factory reset.

If such manual device factory reset is to be avoided, the best approach is to send "script" including wipe action to on-line device only, and subsequently initiate "delete" device action once the wipe action has been CONFIRMED to be successfully initiated/completed.  Such confirmation can be based on expected log item  (e.g. due to some device status information requested before a short time-delayed "wipe" from the same script) from the device log tab of the web console.

If you delete the device and it'S offline, it never get the wipe command but the agent on the device reverts all settings and is staying in register screen.
If then someone presses register on the device, it will be reenrolled to your system and reappear.

To avoid that you need to ensure all devices get wiped (via Soti or recovery menu or via settings menu if available). And delete them then after that.

If a device is deleted from the web-console while it is offline, the removal of the device and unenrollment always succeed.  When such device get on-line again, it talks to the server and will know that it has be unenrolled from the server side, and will prompt user to input enrollment ID/URL again.  It is true that the enrollment ID/URL previously used to enroll the device may be auto-filled, and in such case, pressing the enroll button again may get the device re-enrolled back unless the enrollment ID/URL or any associated authentication password has not be changed by any MobiControl administrator.   If this is not desired, one simple trick is to change the  enrollment ID/URL or change/add authentication password for the corresponding add-devices policy.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

We have over 100 android devices used remotely that were wiped and deleted. We do not know if the devices were online at the time. However these all seem to have reappeared in the web console. Would we be best to try changing the enrolment ID and deleting again?

Hi Jake,

Thank you for your response!

Are any of these devices showing online on the web console currently? Could we try to wipe & delete one test device and monitor the logs to see if both actions are received by the device to understand the device's behaviour.

Kind regards,
