Hi,

I have set up a configuration for Android for Work devices in Kiosk mode. My problem comes when I have to upgrade the version of one of the apps in the kiosk, the app is not in the Google Playstore so i need to enable "unknown sources", then the app basically downloads an apk with the new release and installs. The apk downloads ok, but it gets stuck while installing. I wonder it hungs becasue it is in kiosk mode. So I have tried the same configuration but with no kiosk and the app is updated with no problem.

My question is, do you know if this scenario I want to achieve is feasible (Kiosk mode + update app from unknown sources)?

Thanks

Hi Javier,

Assuming that you are using a package to deploy the application to your devices, can you please make sure the device does not have any Profile with a feature control to prevent installation from unknown sources as below?

Also, under the Advanced settings in your Kiosk mode payload, can you verify if the Activity Suppression is disabled?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Hi and thanks for the prompt reply,

The first version of the app is pushed using a package, but for the upgrade releases the app itself connects to a repository and downloads the apk file in the device.

Regarding the feature profile, yes, I am pushing a profile allowing installations from unknown sources and the Activity suppression is disabled in the Kiosk Mode profile.

Best regards

In that case, the ADB logs from the device while it tries to update the app while in lockdown will help us to get to the root cause of the issue.

I would recommend logging a case with Technical Support team here

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Thanks for your help, I have opened a case C00266345 and attached the device ADB logs.

I am also interested in this result.

I have the same situation of an installed Application attempts to update itself via APK Download and installation but it is surpressed due to Unknown Sources being disabled by KIOSK mode.

I am using Android N, with Soti Enterprise (previously known as Android For Work) Client, Feature Control is enabled to Allowing Unknown Sources so I can access Unknown Sources and enable in Security settings on the OS...

however, Launching Kiosk in Admin mode "resets" and disables the Unknown Sources each time.

This behavior makes no sense, and so I have Case: C00276095 opened as well and hoping for a bug fix soon.. I am on cloud 14.1.7.  Activity Surpression is disabled.

Update:

I had another case opened on this C00275403- and on that one, the tech at Soti said the following after talking to the Soti development team, and they explained that they have already talked to Google about this scenario, but they still need Google to approve this change in the product.

Essentially, they're looking for a green light to consider Admin mode as a NO RESTRICTION mode. If Google agrees that this will not affect our solution set standings, then they will make the changes to permanently remove all restrictions on the device when in Admin mode.

Right now do not have an ETA or fix release for it. As described earlier, we are still waiting for Google to be able to implement this change.
