🧩 Limit Custom Attributes to Specific Device Groups?

Hi everyone, 👋

I’m currently working on optimizing our setup in SOTI MobiControl and was wondering if there’s a way to assign or limit custom attributes to specific device groups only.

The reason behind this is that we only need certain attributes for certain groups, and having all attributes visible for every device quickly becomes confusing and cluttered in the console.

Is there any way to manage visibility or scope of custom attributes per group — or perhaps a best practice to keep things organized when working with many attributes?

Any advice, ideas, or experiences would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Best regards,
Fabian

Hi Fabian,

There's no way currently to limit custom attributes to a specific groups. I know exactly what you mean, but not currently possible, they just appear as a long list.

My usual advice, where at all possible, is to use permissions to control what attributes users can and can't see. This at least reduces the list of attributes available to users. Certainly not an option in cases where all your users have the same permissions or indeed need access to all custom attributes, but it can work in some situations.

Other than that sticking to a well defined naming convention can help as well. Come up with a standardised prefix for each attribute which can then help when searching for attributes at a device or group level.

I do somewhere have a feature request for this :)

Hope that helps,

Robert

Hi Robert,

thank you so much again for your very quick and detailed help! 🙏

It’s a bit of a shame that there isn’t a direct way to limit custom attributes to specific groups, as I think a feature like that could be really useful for keeping things organized, especially in larger deployments.

Your suggestions regarding permissions and naming conventions are very helpful, and we’ll definitely keep them in mind.

Thanks again for taking the time to explain everything so clearly — it’s really appreciated!

Best regards,
Fabian
