Google Managed Enterprise setup

Solved

Hello again

We have an in-house app which is currently distributed to Android devices via a different MDM, which we are ditching in favour of MobiControl. The app is hosted in a Google Developer account - I'm an administrator of that account but not the owner.

I tried to add a managed enterprise to MobiControl using the Enterprise Bindings -> Managed Enterprise controls, which opens Google's Managed Enterprise enrolment page. Clicking 'Get started' turned out to be a mistake because it created a *new* developer account inside my Google account. I then had 2 developer accounts in my Google account, one which I own (the new one) and one which I don't (the one containing our app). And deleting that new account was non-trivial as it involved reaching out to Google support.

Do I have to be the *owner* of a Google Developer account rather than just an administrator in order to bind it to the MobiControl? Or is there some other way to bind an existing developer account to MobiControl?

Thanks!

Is the app a B2B apps developed internally or  by a 3rd party company/IDH?

Do you/your company have access to the apk binary?   If so, the simplest is to create .pcg package and deployed the app directly from your MobiControl server, and the enterprise binding to be used for enrollment can be your newly created Managed-Google-Play account.

It's an internally developed app, which we've previously deployed to Android devices via Managed Google Play via Sophos MDM.

I think this is the easiest option for auto-updating? If we deploy directly from MobiControl, I think we have to delete and re-create the app configuration every time we update the package?

I have a call with a SOTI engineer this afternoon to help me connect MobiControl to our Managed Google Play account.

Thanks again for your help

Agreed with Raymond that the best option for installing an internal app is via a SOTI package. Many other EMMs only support Managed Play for distribution of apps but SOTI carries the advantage of direct APK installs without having to deal with the additional overhead and complexity of a Managed Play installation. You should not have to delete or reconfigure the app with new versions provided that the new versions of the app are a higher version number and have been compiled with the same signing signature.

Thank you both. I am definitely inclined to this approach now, having spent over an hour with the tech guys trying unsuccessfully to bind MobiControl to our Managed Google Play account.

So I'll give that a go.

Thanks again, great support from the community for a newbie.
