Hello,
Is is possible to disable the automatic updates of apps installed as mandatory from Google Play for Work ?
Thank you
As far as I know, there is currently no such control available at Android Enterprise MGA/MGPA portal or in the MDM api.
One possible DIRTY approach that might work is to blacklist Google Play Services (can be one or more bundle ID's depending on device model) with application run control payload. There can be undesirable side effects that varies between different device brands/models. You have to do thorough tests on each device model before use.
Hi Chan, thank you for your comments.
If updates may not be disabled, could at least be restricted to wi-fi connection? This would be a nice feature if it is not available yet.
Would it be possible to restrict updates to when there is wi-fi connections?
This is quite a concern for data expense.
Mobicontrol would be more consistent if these Google Play for Work apps could be deployed as profiles, not as rules, this way is possible to have network restictions.
Thank you
Hi Edgar,
I tend to agree with you on this one. Having the ability to set a network preference/schedule with the rule would be advantageous.
As we create Feature Requests from our cases perhaps I can get you to submit a case to our Technical Support and send me the case number. I will assign the case to a Technician who can file this for you.
You can open a case by emailing us at support@soti.net or by selecting the following link.
Thank you for the feedback.
Regards,
i really support this.
by default devices dont upgrade apps when on WAN so if we could control over what network we want to push updates would be great.
also "when" would be welocme so that we can control a update over a specific night for instance
Hello
In version 14.2 there is a new payload for Android Enterprise that allows to configure how these applications are updated:

How about a way to target a specific app within the Managed Google Play store? For example, if there is one app you don't want to have automatically update so that you can control the version with a package. Meanwhile the rest can automatically update.
For each of the app that you do not want to be automatically upgraded, go to the Managed Google Play store administrator account at Google and configure the app to require upgrade approval even if there is no change in any apps permission in the upgrade version. Then, as long as you do not re-approve permissions for any upgrade version, whatever old version already deployed onto the devices will not be upgraded.
I don't see such settings on the work console the only ones available are :
- maintain approval if no additional permissions are required
- remove approval when additional permissions are required
The one you are talking about would be nice to have, but we never saw it anywhere
Hi Laurent,
You are right that if the upgraded app version does not include extra permission(s), the per-app control approach I mentioned in my previous post would not work. In that case, the only way to block managed Google Play app upgrade is to use the "Managed Google Play" configuration payload in AE profile to globally block upgrade of ALL apps. In the meantime, we can just wait for Google to introduce more precise per-app upgrade control for its Managed Google Play stores in the future.
