Situation

Keeping Samsung devices constantly plugged in causes batteries to swell, which may crack the case or damage internal components. In some cases, it could also cause a fire. On Samsung devices, you can protect and extend battery life by stopping charging before 100% capacity is reached when connected to a power source using the SOTI MobiControl and Knox Service Plugin application.

Environment

  • SOTI MobiControl 2024.0 and later
  • SOTI MobiControl Cloud or On Prem deployment
  • Knox Platform for Enterprise (KPE)
  • Knox Service Plugin
  • Samsung devices running Knox 3.4.1 and above

Process Description

1. Overview

The Knox Service Plugin (KSP) is an enterprise‑focused Samsung app used to deploy, configure, and enforce advanced Samsung Knox Platform for Enterprise (KPE) policies on managed Samsung devices. With SOTI MobiControl, Samsung KPE features can be accessed directly through the Web console at no cost. Administrators only need to push the Knox Service Plugin app through an App Policy and configure Managed App Configs to enable battery protection.

2. Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • Access to the SOTI MobiControl web console
  • Permission to create app policies
  • Android Enterprise Binding and access to Managed Google Play Store
  • Samsung devices running Knox 3.4.1 and above

3. Configure Battery Protection

1. After logging into the SOTI MobiControl web console, select Policies from the hamburger menu. Under Apps, select + to add a new policy, then select Android Enterprise.

Select Android Enterprise

2. Under General, add a name for the App Policy. Under Apps, select + to add a new app.

Create an App policy screen with the General tab selected

3. Select app source as Managed Google Play. Under Bindings, select your organization's binding account. Open Managed Google Play Store, search for and select Knox Service Plugin.

9. Select Save, and save and assign the App Policy to the devices.

Note: Always assign the policy to a few test devices before rolling it out to production devices.

Verification and Validation

Once the Knox Service Plugin app gets installed / updated on the device, go to Settings on the device and search for battery protection. If the toggle in on, then the changes have taken effect.
