We've updated our Samsara app and now the location access and scanning for BT devices notifications are popping up and taking over the whole screen every 5-10 mins. Any ideas on how to get rid of this?

We don't want to block all the notifications for this app because we still need to see there are new messages from dispatch. But I also see it's not showing up for all of the devices. several of them but not all of them are showing these notifications. Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 pro OS14

You have to do your data collection first.  Get hold of the 2 groups of devices (those with reported problem, and those without) and compare them for any difference(s) in device Settings or deployed MDM policy.  After seeing your report on the real cause(s) based on the data collection/analysis performed,  maybe someone here can propose how to remotely reconfigure the devices in bulk to avoid similar problem from happening again.

Hey Katie,

Thanks for posting on SOTI Pulse. Thanks Raymond Chan for your assistance. As mentioned by Raymond, setting up a Data Collection will help you identity the root cause of the issue you're facing.

Are you facing this issue on all the devices were the Samsara apps were updated?

This is happening likely because the updated Samsara app is now using a "Foreground Service" to track location and scan for Bluetooth devices, as required by Android. This triggers a mandatory, persistent notification. Latest Android versions requires a persistent notification for apps running in the background. The pop-up is an "alerting" notification. You can change it to a "silent" one without blocking your dispatch messages.

  • Go to Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Samsara.
  • You will see different notification categories. Find the one for Location or Device Scanning (do NOT touch the one for Messages).
  • Tap on its name and change the setting from Alert to Silent.
  • Also, enable the Minimize option.

If this works assigning proper permissions for the app would resolve the issue you're facing. If we give the app location permission for all time and toggle off battery optimization for it. Thank you!!

Thank you guys! Yes, we are collecting data and doing more troubleshooting. It looks to be an update in a patch version not the major release. As we did some uninstalling, downgrading, testing and upgrading again. I did take a look a the settings you mentioned and right away this is not a setting I could see until I enabled a separate setting: Notification Categories setting, where I then got the setting you mentioned however it is grayed out for me.

before enabling that setting it is not an option fyi:

Hey Katie,

Thanks a lot for your response. Seems to me the Notification Settings might have been disabled as the device is enrolled and might be restricted. I would recommend you to log a case with us so we can further investigate over your findings and help you find a workaround or maybe raise a Feature Request for this feature you're looking for. Thank you!!
