Will MobiControl 15 support SQL Server Web Edition?

Solved Locked

Hi All,

So I'm looking at moving MobiControl  into my originations AWS cloud. My device count is too big for using SQL express, we keep hitting the max DB size and memory limits of SQL express. If following the Soti Sys requirements guide, it would seem that SQL Standard is the preferred database engine to migrate to. SQL Std is quite a large investment, especially as this would not be a shared DB instance for other applications. So my question is, can we use SQL Web edition to host the SOTI database? It has the larger memory, CPU and size limits that I'm looking for, but at half the monthly licensing cost in AWS.

Can anyone confirm that they have tried this and that it is Kosher, both with SOTI support and with MS licensing?

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

A quick follow up on this. There's no reason the web edition shouldn't work with MobiControl. As pointed out the difference is not software related, but more related to hardware availability. On the System Requirements page, there's no mention of specific editions required. Therefore you should be safe to proceed.

Regarding future support of any database other than Microsoft SQL, l will leave Soti to clarify.

In the meantime, you can focus on other temporary solutions.    How many devices are there in your implementation?  I have customers with 2000+ devices for a few years and still have sufficient space margin to delay moving to the paid MS SQL edition.  If the policies you used are not too complicated, it might be possible to clean things up such that your implementation does not hit the 10GB size limit.

Also, if you use a paid MS-SQL standard database server on an AWS server instance,  I don't see any reason why you cannot use that server to support other applications in order to reduce the cost overhead of your MobiControl solution.

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I've been trimming the DB over the past year to keep it under the 10GB limit, but due to the data collection rules and the retention policies, this just isn't feasible anymore. So moving off SQL express is the only option.

I guess the big question is, can MS SQL Web edition be used instead of MS SQL Standard or Enterprise.

From what i can find the functionality of WEB edition fits the needs of removing the DB size limit, along with addition RAM and CPU limits. See Scale Limits Here. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/editions-and-components-of-sql-server-2017?view=sql-server-ver15

From what it looks like, SQL Web edition ticks off all the requirements for Soti to host larger instances, but without the larger costs of SQL Standard edition. I guess what I'm looking for is any confirmation that someone has tried this and that they have not run into any issues with SOTI supporting it.

Thanks
