SOTI MDM update iPadOS behaviour

Solved

Hi,

I would like to know more about using SOTI to deploy mass iPadOS...

The iPadOS size is around 5.5GB, it brings concern as we have to update 90 units of iPad in one go...

If we are to issue "Update OS" command via SOTI, the following questions come to mind (sorry I cannot test now as I cannot afford to update any of my iPad's OS now):

1) Will SOTI spread the update across a specific time frame to avoid congesting the whole bandwidth?

2) When issuing the command, will it force the iPad to update? Or will it prompt a box and ask for user's consent first?

3) We have set to defer OS update for 90 days, after that period, will iPad be forced to update regardless of its current status?

4) Is there a difference between "scan for OS update" and "update OS"?

Thank you for your time.

Hello Lok Koo,

Thank you for your question.

Here are the answers to your questions:
1. An update will be initiated on all the online devices you send the "Update OS" device action to all at once. The update is not spread across a specific time frame.

2. When using the device action "Update OS", it will force update of the operating system of supported Apple devices to the latest available version. The user will not be prompted for consent first.

3.
During the deferral interval the user will not be able to see any OS updates. When the delay expires the users will be prompted to download and install the latest version of the software update available. So the iPad will not be forced to update, they will just be prompted to update after the delay interval expires.
More information on this: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/deployment/depc4c80847a/web

4.
Scan for OS Update - This will scan and then output results via the "Logs" section of the available updates
Update OS - This will update the operating system of supported Apple devices to the latest available version.
Here is a link with more information on device actions: https://www.soti.net/mc/help/v14.3/en/console/devices/managing/actions/using_actions.html

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

After reading Apple's link, I have one more question.

As a lot of OS minor updates can be released within a 90-day period, does that mean that each minor update will have its own 90-day counter?

For example, if I am 14.6 now, does that mean in mid Dec I will see iPad 15 offered to me, and then a month later I will see 15.0.2 in early Jan and then 15.1 in mid Jan?

OR will it directly jump to the latest update?

Thank you.
