Restrict cellular data on iPhones

We have an issue with lots of our iphones using excessive data. We've looked in settings on the handsets and can see it is used by System Services -> General.

Is there any way to restrict the amount of data that the system services could use?

Are there any other settings to help us control/reduce usage of data?

The phones have an application run control setting so that only one app and the settings can be used on the device.

Hi Jake,

The TEM policy available for android devices, isn't available for iOS and so reporting on what specifically is using it (more specifically than just general) isn't possible, nor is performing actions based on certain data thresholds.

General includes app updates and OS updates i believe.

iOS does have a handy feature, that i find few people actually use, called network restrictions. You can find this in profiles. This setting enables you to prevent certain applications from functioning over cellular or while roaming. This may of course not be helpful if you do need the app to work over cellular.

I would also take a look at how frequently that one application you refer to updates. You can control app updates from the app policy you deploy the app from. So you could essentially stop updates from happening automatically and approach it in a more controlled way.

Also can you specify how many mb of data is being used, you say "excessive" but how much is that?

Hi Robert, thanks for your suggestions. In our case some devices are using tens of GBs of data a day. The app we deploy is our own one and only has an update every few months.

I'm pretty sure this is some kind of iOS bug and we are hoping to get some devices returned to test/tweak in person as there seems to be very little we will be able to control via the MDM.

Hello Jake

Thanks for posting in SOTI Central.

Could you please confirm if you had an opportunity to test the suggested solutions by Robert and has it successfully addressed your query?

Also Apple does not allow you to set data limits directly for “System Services”. The best control you have is to reduce the number of system features enabled and force Wi-Fi use for heavy operations.

If the above solution helps you to resolve your issue, then please mark this post as the solution. Also, feel free to reach out if you need clarification or have any follow-up questions.

Kind Regards,
