Mobicontrol Setup Questions

We have a Zebra TC52 device that has stagenow installed out of the box. I have generated the barcode to configure the device as we want after initial setup but I am having problems with getting the MobiStage client on the device so we can configure Mobicontrol.

Is it possible to download the APK from our Mobicontrol webpage or how do we go about getting this device configured properly.

Thanks in advance

Hi Arron,

Try going to Soti.net/OEM for the agent.  However, this being the case, the agent should download based on the criteria you established in the rule you have created in MobiControl to enroll the devices.

Nonetheless, the most up to date agents can be found at this site.

Hope this helps.

The TC52 ships with Android Oreo which SOTI isnt really supporting for Android+ Device Administrator based management anymore. Google is deprecating the DA management API with each subsequent Android dessert release and SOTI has preemptively started pushing us to Android Enterprise DO as a result.

The MobiStage client that was pre-installed on some Zebra Android devices running older Android flavors such as Lollipop on the TC8000 and WT6000 leveraged the DA API which is no longer viable on the Oreo based TC52s. You are going to have to switch your enrollment and management methodology to Android Enterprise in order to properly support and manage the TC52s. You can use any of the 4 primary Google offered methods to enroll as an AEDO device from a Factory Reset state at the Setup Wizard (NFC, QR, DPC Token, ZTE) or you can use the 5th, Zebra specific option, of StageNow based DO enrollment. All AEDO based enrollment methods are built around starting from a factory reset state so you will likely have to start from scratch if you have already "configured the device how you want". This is by design and enforced by Google, not SOTI or Zebra, as they see the legacy Device Administrator API as a security risk to end users given that any number of DAs can be activated and any App can request that elevated permission at any point, something that a lot of end users blindly accepted. There can be only one Device Owner on the other hand and in order to properly enforce that Google mandates that enrollment as AEDO occurs from a factory reset state.

You are not the first person to inadvertently encounter this situation, but I'm quite surprised your equipment vendor that sold you the TC52s didnt properly warn you of the differences in management that newer versions of Android bring. Quite reckless if you ask me!!

I have the Mobicontrol APK downloaded now but I don't know where I am supposed to find the mcsetup.ini file on our mobicontrol server so I can push that through StageNow so I can enroll the device.

Is anyone able to help with that?

In general, any mcsetup.ini  file for Android enrollment can be downloaded by clicking the corresponding add-devices rule and select download agent in the popup menu.

The INI is also not a requirement for the StageNow based DO enrollment. If you skip that step in the SN wizard then the AE agent will prompt you for an enrollment ID once it is launched and you can enter that manually or scan it into that agent from there.
