Issues enrollment iPadOS 17.2 (iPad partially set up)

Hi,

We have a few iPads that need to be enrolled, they were updated to iPadOS 17.2 and when I use Apple Configurator to get them in Business Manager I get the following error message:

"This iPad is already partially set up. This could affect the security of your device. Would you like to erase the partial set-up and start again, or continue with the existing set-up?"

If I choose "Erase and Start Again" the process is restarted but I come back to the same screen. If I choose to proceed I can enroll the device in Mobicontrol and can manage it without issue.

Has anyone else been experiencing the same problem and how have you dealt with it? What are the risks of choosing "Continue with partial set-up?"

The error message you described may be related to the way how you added the device to ABM with Apple Configurator.   Are you using Apple Configurator for MAC or Apple Configurator for iOS app ?   What is the version of the software?

Did you use exactly the same procedure to successfully add other Apple device(s) earlier that iPadOS 17.2?

Hi Raymond,

I'm using Apple Configurator (version 2.17) for MacOS (14.2.1), yes I'm using exactly the same procedure as I use for devices not yet upgraded to iPadOS 17.2 where the issue isn't happening.

I found a post on a community online where people are experiencing the same issue... There seems to there be a bug in iOS 17.2 that causes this error.

I wonder if there are any issues with just selecting "Continue with partial setup" and what the best course of action is...

As the problem has been reported for multiple MDM solutions on iOS/iPAD17.2  devices only,  I strongly believe the problem stems from bug(s) in Apple backend server(s) or its v17.2 device firmware.    Problem of similar pattern happens every now and then for Apple device platform, especially during Q4 of each year when Apple releases their major device firmware upgrade.

To be on the safe side, I would recommend you to wait for new iOS/iPadOS firmware release with documented fix(es) related to the reported enrollment issue.  Until then, you should deploy policy to defer firmware upgrade for other existng enrolled devices.   For newly bought devices already with iOS/iPadOS 17.2,  I think it's safer to wait for the update before adding to ABM and initiating enrollment to your MDM server.   This is particularly true if your devices deployment  subsequently involve data backup/restore service from iCloud, MFA or other advanced services from Apple backend(s).

Thank you Raymond, we will wait for a fix.

In the meantime I managed to enroll a device, since this device was already in Apple Business Manager, by using the Automatic Enrollment type in Apple Confgurator the device was enrolled without any issue other than a little delay when downloading the MDM profile.

Hi In008

Thank you for posting on SOTI Pulse. Raymond, your prompt response and willingness to assist are highly valued!

Could you kindly inform us of the MobiControl version you are using to enroll your iPad OS 17.2?

It's important to note that only our latest MobiControl versions fully support iOS 17.

Kind regards,
