MobiControl migrate database to new server

Hello.

We currently have installed SOTI MobiControl v13.4 and i am looking to update to v14 ultimately.

We have the following servers:

- Database and Deployment Server: WS 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008

- a second Deployment Server: WS 2016

I am thinking to replace the old database server with a new WS2016 and SQL Server 2014 and then upgrade the Mobi version.

Has anyone experienced with migration of Mobi databases? Will everything work out after importing the database to the new server?

What might be possible issues?

Thank you in advance.

In principle, the migration of existing MobiControl database from MS-SQL-2008R2 to 2014 should be handled properly with MS SQL installation/SQL-Management-Studio binaries.

However, the migration of a production system with many enrolled devices is much more complicated if you also upgrade your host operating system, MobiControl version and an HA system with multiple deployment servers.  Every implementation is different and it can be quite difficult to talk about the process casually in a general sense, or dig deep into sensitive information related to network/security, on an open forum.   If you have a mission critical system that requires smooth migration of all enrolled devices and cannot tolerate any device recall/re-enrollment/factory-reset,  then I reckon you'd better outsource the task to Soti Professional Service team or other experts who have much experience in similar projects before.

I tried that one. It was kinda working somehow. But not full.

What i did:

I had SQL Server 2008 R2 and upgraded it to SQL Server 2014.
Worked fine.

Then i tried to upgrade MC v14.2 to v14 but the installer said that
the database of mobicontrol had some problems with the compatibility
level from the MobiControlDB database. I enhanced the compatibilty
level of that database from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014.

Then i was able to install the MC v14.4. It was acutally working but
the only problem i had was that i couldn't update the database by
updating the agent compatibility.

I think i did something wrong...After rolling back to my old backup
i destroyed my whole database and mobicontrol.

So i would ask the SOTI support for some guidance through the steps...

I don't know how you destroyed your database and MobiControl while rolling back, which normally should not happen if snapshots are taken properly at the right time.  Your agent upgrade issue may only be related to your firewall configurations.

Just hope that you do not have many production devices on the system, nor need any device recall or re-enrollment.

Hello AlinP,

What were your steps in between;

A) I had SQL Server 2008 R2 and upgraded it to SQL Server 2014.
Worked fine.

&

B)Then i tried to upgrade MC v14.2 to v14 but the installer said that
the database of mobicontrol had some problems with the compatibility
level from the MobiControlDB database. I enhanced the compatibility
level of that database from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014.

Raymond is correct that migrations are complicated and hence the reason we suggest dedicated assistance, but since we're here...

Was MC already installed during this?  What does "worked fine" mean?  Was MobiControl 14.2 working after you upgraded the SQL server from 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014?

Regards,
