Abnormal data usage from the Google Play Store

Device Enrolment Method: Android Enterprise Work Managed

Device: Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (SM-T225)

I have an issue that has started in the last month or so, where the majority of our managed devices have started using abnormal amounts of data, and upon looking into it on the device it is showing as coming from the Google Play Store. Typically, we would see less than 1GB of data from the Google Play Store per month, but we are now seeing 5GB+ consistently.

As far as i can tell we cant dig down deeper and find out why the Google Play Store is using this much data, but i would think it is one of the following options:

  1. An app being downloaded, then automatically removed by our App Catalogue Rule, then repeating that process constantly
  2. Apps updating in the background (seems unlikely as 95% of the apps on the device are the pre-installed Google apps). Possibly also being affected by the App Catalogue Rule?
  3. Android OS update being downloaded and then failing to install as we block this on all devices (dont think this would be the Google Play Store though?)

Is anyone aware of any way that i can narrow down what would be causing this issue? Alternatively, is there a script that can be used to prevent the Google Play store from using data unless it is connected to Wi-Fi?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Ryan

My assumption would be updates to system services on the device being pushed by Google Play. Apps like Chrome and/or the system webview are updated fairly regularly and can be 100mb+ at at time. Every other system application that is still enabled on the device will also receive regular updates automatically in the background (Youtube, Youtube Music, Maps, Keep, Drive, etc).

Thanks for the response Matt.

Are there any scripts to disable these sort of updates?

You could potentially disable or blacklist Google Play if you don't have a business case for any Managed Play app installs. You could also disable the individual system apps that aren't used on the device in order to restrict those updates.

We do use the Google Play Store to push out managed play apps, so i dont think i can remove that.

Is the best way to disable the individual system apps to use the Application Run Control profile, or will the GPS still try and update apps that are removed using this method?

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your post and screenshot Ryan.

As your issue involves high data usage, and seems to come from Google Play Store, we will need a bug report capturing at least 24 h logs while the devices are consuming high data, and for that you may to raise a ticket with Technical Support to further investigate your issue.

Thank you.
