Zebra LifeGuard Without Google Play

Solved

Hi,

in the release notes for MobiControl 2025.1 is mentioned:

Use Zebra LifeGuard Without Google Play

This feature allows administrators to automatically provision the Zebra enrollment app for Zebra LifeGuard as an Enterprise app via App policy without compromising security compliance and avoid interfacing with Google Play services.

How does this actually work? I don't find anything more about it, then just this entry.

If I choose an Enterprise app it either needs an APK or an URL to download the app?

Here the answer from SOTI:

upon looking further into this, you will need to find the apk files for the Zebra Enrollment Manager and Zebra Common Transport Layer from Zebra and add that manually in the Enterprise app store, please see the following link which will show you a guide to do so:

https://www.soti.net/mc/help/v2025.1/en/console/applications/appcatalogrules/android_enterprise_applications.html

However, you will need to find a link to download the Zebra Enrollment Manager and Zebra Common Transport Layer applications from Zebra and then progress through the usual Lifeguard OTA set up, please see the following link for more information:

There are two requisite apps needed to enroll the devices into LifeGuard OTA - Zebra Enrollment Manager and Zebra Common Transport Layer. These apps also require some level of managed configurations as well in order to complete the registration /enrollment to validate that the devices are entitled for LifeGuard OTA and to provide the scaffolding for that system to work. These apps historically have only been available from Google Play which was an unfortunate dependency for a process (firmware updating) that typically is performed right after enrolling a device. I never liked having to wait for Google Play based app installs to complete before a firmware update could proceed so I never adopted LifeGuard OTA through SOTI and instead continued to rely on File Sync based firmware updates which are more predictable and reliable anyway. This move introduces the ability to distribute these two requisite apps through an App Policy as an Enterprise app (NOT through a Profile) instead of an App Policy as a Google Play app. This introduces a slightly more reliable system of getting the devices initially configured for LifeGuard OTA and it removes any dependencies (or network connections) to Google Play as a requirement since SOTI is distributing the APKs directly to the devices.

Okay - but there are no apps in 2025.1 in the Enterprise App Store part.

Thats what confuses me... I can upload an APK or use an URL where it can download an app. But there are no Zebra apps that I could configure...?
Of course they are in the Managed Google Play tab but nothing in the Enterprise App Store.

Do you just get an APK from Zebra directly? Bc the only "official" source I can find is the Google Play Store where I can download these 2 apps.

Here is the app source for Managed Google Play where I can configure it via Google Play Store:

And here is the part for Enterprise App Store where I can just upload an APK or can set an URL to download an app:

Yes I would agree, you'd have to reach out to Zebra to request these APKs. I don't see them otherwise publicly listed outside of APK mirror sites.
