How to stop users from running another app (Chrome) via intent?

Hi

I'm having issue to stop the device (SM-T395 Android 7.1.1) from running Chrome when MobiControl Lockdown is enabled.

The following package has been added into application run control blacklist.

com.android.chrome

But the users still can launch Chrome via Google Maps. (click on the restaurant, find the website and chrome will pop up.)

Is there any workaround to stop the device from running Chrome on it?

Hello Wayne Wang,

Thank you for your post,

Please try following script on one device and if that works please push on rest of the devices

Manualblacklist add com.android.chrome

Manualblacklist on

There is a Chrome Browser and there is a Chrome System WebView. You can disable the full fledged Browser app but disabling the System Webview is going to be a little more difficult. There are lot of applications that leverage and rely on that WebView that you may not realize. For instance, the last I checked, MobiControl Lockdown itself is rendering HTML within a system WebView. If you tried to disable the System WebView you will end up with bigger issues.

Hi Matt

Thanks for replying.

And yes, I saw the Chrome WebView but as you said, disable it might cause bigger issues so I never think about disabling it.

I really want to know is there anyone has any experiences on successfully disabling chrome via Application Run Control and how to do it?

Hi

Thanks for help!

That works.

But to make it work, I need to allow a xxxxxxx permission enabled for MobiControl.

(Sorry, i click on it accidentally and forget about the name.)

This shouldn't be a big deal.

Btw, is there any way to grant the permission to MobiControl via Scripts?

Hello Wayne Wang,

For Android Plus devices you have to manually grant the permissions on the devices

Also, this feature is available in latest version of MobiControl 15.0.2

Another idea would be to use the managed configurations of Chrome to restrict browsing, so although the browser is shown, the user may not open any website.

That could be achieved using a catalog rule and setting the black url list to "*"
