Issue Description

When trying to delete a device group, the SOTI MobiControl web console may display the following error:

"Error: Unable to delete the device group 'DEVICEGROUPNAME' because it is being targeted by X policies. Edit the policies to remove this group as a target and then attempt"

This indicates that the group is still targeted by one or more policies—even if it is marked as excluded in those policy assignments.

Environment

  • Product: SOTI MobiControl

  • Versions Affected: SOTI MobiControl versions earlier than 2025.0.0

Symptoms

  • Deletion of a device group fails with the following error message referencing policy targeting: "Error: Unable to delete the device group 'DEVICEGROUPNAME' because it is being targeted by X policies. Edit the policies to remove this group as a target and then attempt"
  • The affected group appears under the Assignments tab of one or more policies but is marked as Excluded.

Cause

The issue occurs because device groups marked as excluded in the Assignments tab are still being internally flagged as associated with the policy. This prevents deletion since SOTI MobiControl is checking for any policy linkage, regardless of inclusion or exclusion.

Issue Resolution

This issue has been resolved in SOTI MobiControl 2025.0.0 or later. From this release onward, excluded groups are no longer considered as active targets of a policy when attempting to delete them.
