 FAQ

What is legacy COPE on Android 8-10?

  • These are managed Android devices with both work and personal profiles, on which IT Admins have visibility into the personal profile. On Android 11 and higher, access to the personal profile is restricted at the OS level to maintain user privacy.

Which devices are affected by this change?

  • All Android COPE devices running OS versions 8, 9, and 10 are considered legacy COPE and are affected by this deprecation.

What does “end of life” mean for COPE on Android 8–10?

  • End of life means that, while SOTI will continue to release updates for the Android Enterprise agent, there is no guarantee that COPE will continue to work correctly on Android 8–10 devices. Any COPE issues on these devices will not be fixed, and technical support will no longer be provided.

What happens to devices after the end-of-life date?

  • Devices may continue to operate but could become unmanageable. The Android Enterprise agent may still be automatically upgraded to version 2026.1.0 or higher via the Play Store, and may not function correctly on legacy COPE devices.

What actions can I take to ensure management of these devices?

We recommend the following actions:

  • Upgrade your devices to Android OS 11 or higher to maintain COPE management with user privacy.
  • Re-enroll your devices as either Work Managed or Work Profile management modes. Note this may require a factory reset.

Can I keep the device on Android 8–10 COPE indefinitely?

  • While it is possible to take no action and keep your devices on Android 8–10 COPE, we strongly recommend you follow the upgrade or re-enrollment actions outlined above.

What happens to devices that upgrade to Android OS 11 or above?

  • Devices that upgrade to Android 11 or higher will seamlessly transition to COPE with user privacy. No user interaction is required.

Will I lose files or resources that are on the device?

  • Data loss depends on the migration approach. OS upgrades alone typically do not remove user data. However, re-enrollment scenarios, such as switching to Work Profile, may require a factory reset, which will erase all data on the device. We recommend that you back up any critical data when re-enrolling.

Will policies, apps and configurations still work after upgrading to Android OS 11 or above?

  • There is no guarantee that policies or configurations will function as they did before the upgrade. Apps installed on the device, within both work and personal profiles, will remain unaffected after upgrading.

Will future SOTI MobiControl servers be compatible with Android Enterprise agents that support legacy COPE?

  • With SOTI MobiControl 2027.0.0, you will no longer be able to enroll new Android 8–10 COPE devices. Legacy COPE devices enrolled before the 2027.0.0 server upgrade will remain enrolled but may become unmanageable.
