App gets suddenly uninstalled from device

Hello, anyone has encountered a scenario wherein app gets uninstalled from the device? There are no logs saying that it has been uninstalled, and the app is showing uninstalled in the Application tab.

There are two scenarios:
1) Showing uninstalled in the application tab, profile is showing installed.

Fix: Force package installation

2) Showing uninstalled in the application tab, no profile, no app policy related to the app

When checking the possible related profiles or app policy, the device is not even in the assignment

There's nothing unusual in the logs, nor in the device/web console log

We've raised a case to SOTI but wondering if anyone had the same experience in the past.

If the user uninstalls it manually (if allowed) this could happen or if you (maybe by mistake) put it also in the profile "application run control" to blacklist it there. This could also happen.

None of those things mentioned above can be seen in the logs.

Kristine,

Managed apps deployed with .pcg in profile can be uninstalled by device end-users if not disallowed.  You will have case (1) status shown if such uninstallation did happen.  However, what Rafael mentioned about application run control (ARC) profile blacklist is NOT accurate.  Putting the bundle-ID of an already installed app in an ARC blacklist will NOT make the status become "uninstalled" in the application tab in the web-console.  Depending on your device brand/model,  the app icon may either be totally removed on the related device screen so that there is nowhere to tap to attempt launching it, or the icon may stay on the screen but tapping on it will cause a quick screen flickering and the attempt to launch it just fails.

You can get your case (2) if a previously installed app, irrespective of how it had been installed by either Mobicontrol server (with an existing or deleted .pcg/profile policy), or by the device-administrator/device end-user (with an apk on the device file system), is uninstalled.  Some device firmware will still keep a record of such uninstalled apps, which is reported back to MobiControl server and shown in the web-console.  It is totally possible that you won't see any log entry related to uninstallation, or even installation, of such apps  in the web console.

Raymond: Regarding:

Even i was only talking about the behaviour, not the status in the applications tab in the device details, your sentence here is completely wrong! We backlisted Chrome on several devices via ARC and it's now shown as uninstalled in the applications tab in the web-console!

I was only talking about the behaviour he describes, that an app gets instantly uninstalled after being installed (as i understood). We have seen this in the past by a very stupid missconfiguration (wrong assignement filters) when an app is provided (via App policy) and at the same time blocked via ARC. Then it always gets uninstalled directly after installation (loop).

It's also possible that the app was provided via Soti (doen't matter if package or app policy), if this assignement is removed from the device, the app will be also be uninstalled (if via package, then it depends on the profile and package settings). This would fit to your 2. point @ Kristine

Rafael,

If you have cases where backlisted Chrome on some devices resulted in the app being shown as uninstalled in the applications tab in the web-console, please share with the community the device brand/model, firmware version, and Mobicontrol server/agent versions.  I'll see if I can arrange some tests to be done with similar set-up.

In fact,  I haven't seen anything like this in the last ten years.  I had actually rechecked if there is any recent changes using some new devices I had on hand before I posted my comment two days ago.  After all, putting a bundle-ID in ARC blacklist will not get an app actually uninstalled in any of the devices I tested before.  The app was only banned from being launched by any launcher/process manager, but it still physically occupied the flash memory space on the device. So, if your particular devices really reports "uninstalled" in the application tab, the term used is misleading to any administrator.  A better status to be used should be "blacklisted", "disabled", ....   I can file a feature request to Soti once your claimed result has been confirmed in my tests.

I can provide several examples:

  • Lenovo TBX-505 where we block Chrome and is shown as uninstalled.
  • Samsung A50/A7 where we block Facebook app (as an example) and is shown as uninstalled.
  • Nokia (several models) where we block the SIM Toolkit / SIM Tool Kit (name is different between Models) and is also shown as uninstalled.
  • Zebra TC51 where we block for example PTT Express and is shown as uninstalled.

Hi Kristine,

Thank you for contacting SOTI Pulse.

I understand that you have opened a case with SOTI Support and that there is a workaround currently in place. Unfortunately at this time, it seems that we do not have this feature in the latest release of SOTI MobiControl as outlined by both Raymond and Rafael in their responses. I would like you to create a support case (click here) or call the SOTI Support team (click here) to raise a Feature Request. These feature requests should be created by customers via a Support case.

Please keep in mind that this would not be an instant resolution as SOTI Product Team have to work internally with different departments to get this added. So, this may take weeks to months to get it included in the new build if the development feels that this would be feasible. Please follow the release notes of SOTI MobiControl to get an update on the improvements done on the new release.

https://docs.soti.net/soti-mobicontrol/release-notes/

If this post has helped you in solving your inquiry, I would request you to mark the particular comment as "is solution", so others may benefit from this information.

Have a great day.
