Chrome browser fails to install in Android Enterprise

LEGO SYSTEM A-S IT-DELIVERY

I have an issue with a newly enrolled DataLogic Skorpio X5 device, enrolled to Mobicontrol in Device Owner mode, with a Managed Google Play account.

The issue is that Google Chrome is not available from the main menu of the device. I have added an App Policy with the Chrome browser, and when I go to Google Play on the device, I can see that it repeatedly tries to install Google Chrome, but fails at the "installing" state.

I have previously had an Application Run Control installed on the device, that by accident blocked Google Chrome, but even after removing that profile it is not working. Any suggestions what to do?

Blacklisting Chrome with Application Run Control can get very messy and is not recommended. The SOTI Lockdown utilizes the WebView, often powered by Chrome on GMS devices to display the launcher HTML. The Lockdown is also what simultaneously enforces the Application Run Control while it is active. Because of this conflict the actual application of a Chrome Blacklist can get in a very weird state and you will likely see odd behavior like the screen flashing a lot when exiting and launching the lockdown. I had serious trouble trying to remove Chrome out of Application Run Control cleanly after it had been added. I eventually had to re-add Chrome to the Application Run Control, exit and relaunch the Lockdown manually on the device, ensure that the Run Control was successfully applied and then remove Chrome from the Blacklist before it was successfully re-enabled on the devices. It was an absolute mess to clean up. It may honestly be easier to Factory Reset and Re-enroll the devices and start over depending on how many and how distributed they are.

Thanks for the elaborate answer Matt. I ended up reenrolling the device as you also suggest. After that it worked fine :)

Hey Andreas,

did you had created a enrollment QR Code for the Enrollment ?

If yes can you check if you had enablet the option "disable all Apps"

Does SOTI list Chrome as installed under apps tab?

Have you tried the enable system app script? Chrome is considered a system app and it might just bring it back for you:

enable_system_app com.android.chrome

How are you enrolling the Datalogic Devices?

a generated QR code over this Side https://datalogic.github.io/aeqr/

Or with the Tool Scan2Deploy : https://github.com/datalogic/scan2deploy-studio/releases/tag/v1.7.0

I believe I have found a fix for this issue.  We too had Chrome blacklisted with and then needed to reactivate it on devices.

Chrome show installed, without the icon on the app list.  SOTI console shows it uninstalled.  Application is disabled in app settings and cannot be enabled as it pops-up with Mobicontrol won't allow the action.

My fix is to send the uninstall com.android.chrome legacy script.  This then immediately enables it and you can then open it or update it within the managed play store.

Hopefully this will assist anyone in future.
