App policy

I have a question understanding app policies.

I created an app policy including an apk file with deployment Mandatory and a config (app source = Enterprise).
On the device under configuration I see that the policy is asigned.

My understanding was, that the app will be automatically installed with the app policy set... but it doesn't :-(.

I than tried to install the app via package and only set the config via policy. Result app installed config doesn't.

Am I doing anything wrong?

We deploy apps via enterprise app policy as well (including managed app config) and it's working well.

Maybe you don't wait enough, how long time did you provide it to be installed after recognizing it's not?

In addition: If you have MGP in use, ensure there are no apps stuck in the playstore updating or so, we saw this also prevents the installation of enterprise apps sometimes.

Hi Thomas,

Have you ever successfully deployed any app policy on this or other MobiControl server(s) in the past?

What are the version and build numbers of your MobiControl server?

What are the  brand and model of the device?  What about the active MDM API's reported on the device or web-console?

Do you have similar problem with app policy for other device brand/model(s) on the same MobiControl server?  Or is the problem only found in this particular device brand/model?

Hi Raymond,

I've got the newest version Release 2024.1 -- Build 1052 -- March 20, 2024 installed on prem.

We've got Zebra MC94 devices.
I just recognized... when I open Mobicontrol agent on the device and click on catalouge and go to internal I can see the app (Sorry my scanner is in German so I don't know the exact translation).

When I now click on install it fails and says it could not be downloaded.

I think this could be a configuration problem on server side. Recently I changed a certificate in MobiControl Administration Utility to get an ssl connection.

The scanners have no internet access.

One last question. If the app is set to mandatory, it should install automatically, right?

I think I have solved the Problem. In the mobicontrol administration utility the device management adress was pointing on the IP instead of the FQDN. I think this did the trick.

Thanks for your help anyway!!!

Thomas,

You are right.  If an app is set to be "mandatory",  then it will be silently & automatically pushed to the device,  provided the enrollment mode of the targeted device support such silent push operation.

However, other factors on the device can affect whether the operation can be successfully completed.  These include, but are not limited to:

- insufficient free memory

- directory permission/limitations

- app permission(s) and targeted SDK

- feature control and other restriction policies already deployed on the device

- existence of non-managed app of same bundle-ID already installed on the device

etc.

OK, now I know my problem. When the agent connects to the Server I get a certificate warning.

When I am in Kiosk mode I don't see this warning and can not confirm it. That's the reason why the app is not installing automatically.

I exported the mobicontrol root certificate and pushed it to the client to get rid of this message... but no success.
