Decommission/Disable Zebra MC40

Hi all,

Looking for feedback on some best practises regarding the disabling of a device, in this case an MC40 for a user.

Current options would be:

1) Factory Reset - this would return the device to it's original state, but leave the device open for the user to connect to WIFI, use camera, change settings etc. Trying to avoid this if possible.

2) Uninstall all apps, apply generic blank MobiControl lockdown profile. This leaves the MobiControl profile active and communicating back to our deployment servers. Not sure if this is what I want to have happen either.

3) Uninstall all apps, set a different device PIN and then uninstall or wipe the MobiControl application as the last step in the process.

Option 3 is what I'm currently considering but does anyone have any better recommendations?

Can you explain the scenario a little more? You want to decommission the older MC40s but in doing to you still want to keep them locked down in some fashion? Is the concern that someone is going to steal them from the environment if they completely wiped and are unlocked?

Theft wasn't the first issue that came to mind, but would be another reason to ensure these are not accessible to anyone once wiped. Basically want to prevent the following scenarios:

  • Prevent access to sdcard
  • Prevent tethering to 3rd party Laptop via USB
  • Prevent connection to 3rd party WIFI
  • Prevent use of camera, etc

Needless to say, we will wipe all application data as part of this process but the immediate solution in my mind right now is to change the device PIN, before wiping MobiControl from the device.

Could you please clarify your situation?  Do you still have MobiControl license maintenance/subscription after the devices are decommissioned?

How do you intend to prevent use of camera, SD-card, USB etc after MobiControl app (I guess you meant the device agent) is removed?

The initial thought was to change the device PIN and uninstall the MobiControl agent as the last step, then delete the device from the server side. The device would then need to be Factory Reset at a later date.

Its looking more and more like a Factory Reset is the easiest and most straight forward solution from a remote deployment perspective.
