iOS App-Specific Location Services

Hello all,

I have a customer on console version 14.4.9.1034 and they have an internally built application for which they always want the location services enabled. Right now we are manually configuring the setting and then locking out the ability to change it via the Content and Privacy restrictions in Screen Time on the device itself before sending the device to the end user. This causes a variety of issues and the customer is looking for a way to control this via Soti.

My question is, does anyone know if a custom profile that can be built to control this setting just as it relates to this one app? To make it a little more complex, they are a mix of DEP and non-DEP iPhones and the iOS ranges from 11 to 13.

Thank you for your post, did you tried custom profile which is available under profiles?

I saw this option but I am unsure of how to build it out.

Hi Megan,

Do not waste time to raise any feature request to Soti on this.  What can be configured on Apple devices are defined by Apple as documented in their latest official Conifguration Profile Reference downloadable at

Thos document is updated from time to time by Apple.  Remotelly turning on location services globally or for particular app is currently not included and thus not possible.   No MDM software can do anything more than what Apple firmware supports.

However, one possible hack to TEMPORARILY force GPS/location service on for supervised devices is to enable the MDM Lost mode.   Atternatively, if your location service can be manually furned on before being rolled out to the field, one possible workaournd reported on the web is to use the restriction "allow Find My Friends Modification" on SOME supported supervised devices.   (I haven't done any extensive tests to verify the effectiveness of this workaround).
