Zebra TC70 with Android version 5.1.1 unable to use AFW#mobicontrol?

Greetings,

We currently have Zebra TC52's and Samsung Galaxy Tab A that we enroll with no issue and use our Managed Google Play store, but our Zebra TC70's were AOSP devices and were unable to take advantage of the Managed google play store.

I have upgraded a TC70 to Android 5.1.1 and switched to a GMS build, following Zebras release note instructions. When I try to use the AFW#mobicontrol tag in the device setup I am prompted with "Android version on this Device is not compatible with work accounts." Everything I can find says that this version of Android should be supported. Is there another avenue to getting these devices on our Managed google play? Are specific devices potentially not supported? Greatly appreciate any insight, and please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Thanks!

Android L was so early in the AFW/Android Enterprise proliferation that I would argue that it doesn't even really support that management style. The framework for AFW was put in way back then but it is extremely limited.

TC70s running L should be managed under Android Classic / Android+ using Device Administrator based management. There is actually a built in MobiControl Stage app in the TC8000 and TC70 OS that should enable you to directly enroll into the environment without having to install anything.

Unfortunately for you, running a hybrid environment of Android Enterprise (DO) and Android Classic (DA) devices will result in a duplication of most of your Profiles as you need to create separate Profiles for each given that the architecture and capabilities are different.

Keep in mind these are concepts that are fundamental to Android management and not specifically a problem with SOTI.

Hello Matt,

Your point on running a hybrid environment is spot on, and exactly the reason I was exploring if I could get these AOSP devices swapped over to GMS and running on our managed google play.

Our fleet of Zebra TC70s and TC52's are performing the same job function, so we do our best to keep both devices with similar capabilities as far as apps go. Without a few things (mainly The PlayStore and Chrome) this is getting harder to do as time goes on, and as we add more web dependent apps to the TC52 (PWA's and online submitted forms) with ease, we struggle more and more to get these on the TC70 and functioning properly. We are sunsetting these TC70s for TC52's, but are needing to probably squeeze one more year out of them.

I thank you for your response, and your time!
