Moving Outdoor Location from SOTI MobiControl to SOTI XSight

This article provides information about the planned migration of outdoor location capabilities from SOTI MobiControl to SOTI XSight in the 2026.0.0 release scheduled for October 2025.

This transition represents our commitment to innovation and addresses key feedback from our valued customers. 

Outdoor Location Today in SOTI MobiControl (up to version 2025.x) 

The outdoor location is currently available via:

• The Location tab in SOTI MobiControl’s device details screen:

For individual devices, users can access the following features directly beneath the map:

• Locate - Initiates a request to the SOTI MobiControl Agent to retrieve the most recent GPS data for the selected device, subsequently updating its position on the map. 
• Track - Enables continuous tracking of a device for up to one hour. As the system receives new position data, these locations are plotted on the map, allowing for real-time monitoring. The track feature incorporates snap-to-road capability to delineate the device's likely route during the selected timeframe.
• History - To explore the historical location data of a device, users must first establish a data collection policy with "Location" specified as a data collection point. After setting up such a policy, users can specify a particular date and time range to review the device's past locations. 
• Geofences - By choosing the geofence option, users gain the tools to create and manage geofences. This feature facilitates the delineation of geographical boundaries for devices, enabling users to set up new geofences and adjust existing ones as needed. 

Outdoor Location in SOTI XSight 2026.0.0 (October 2025) 

In the 2026.0.0 update, these outdoor location features currently within SOTI MobiControl will transition to SOTI XSight.

• Locate  - The location tab will be removed at both device and group levels in SOTI MobiControl. Selection of the location action will seamlessly redirect users to SOTI XSight.
• Track - Real-time tracking is moving to the Live View feature in SOTI XSight. It's important to note that real-time tracking will require a SOTI XSight license.
• History - Historical location data will be plotted on a map in SOTI XSight for devices with an established location data collection policy in SOTI MobiControl.

Outdoor Geofences in SOTI MobiControl 2026.0.0 (October 2025) 

In the 2026.0.0 update the outdoor geofence feature will no longer be available via the location tab in the device details screen. Instead, geofence management will be available in a new dialog accessible via Signal Policies.

Users will retain all existing functionality, including: 

• Creating geofences 
• Deleting geofences 
• Renaming geofences 

This change will not affect geofence APIs. 

Considerations 

Licensing

The enhanced outdoor location features in SOTI XSight will be available to all users, regardless of SOTI XSight license status. However, those without a SOTI XSight license will encounter a limited version of SOTI XSight, which only permits viewing of current and historical device locations. To track devices in real-time via Live View, users must have a SOTI XSight license.

Permissions

Permissions for SOTI XSight location services will require configuration post-upgrade to ensure seamless functionality when the "Live View" action is initiated. To access Location Services in SOTI XSight, users will need the following permissions:

• SOTI MobiControl:
  • General Permissions - “View GPS Location”
  • Device Group - Managed Devices - Send Action Commands - “Locate”
• SOTI XSight
  • General Permissions - “Locate”

Compliance

SOTI XSight will provide options to hide location functionality, aligning with legal requirements and privacy concerns, similar to the functionality previously available in SOTI MobiControl.

Versioning

An alignment with the minimum SOTI XSight version is essential for this migration. It will be necessary for a customer to upgrade both SOTI MobiControl and SOTI XSight to 2026.0.0.
