Situation
Multi-App Kiosk is a Windows Modern feature that permits only specified applications and settings alongside a familiar Windows OS navigation experience. Both Modern and Desktop Classic Applications can be added to a Multi-App Kiosk. The following steps detail how to add a classic application not included in the predefined list of available applications.
Environment
This is supported in SOTI MobiControl version 15.5 and later.
Process Description
- On your target device, navigate to the application's program folder. Select the application, then select Copy path.
- Paste the copied path in a text file for later use. Note: In this case, Windows Media Player x86 is used as an example of a custom Desktop Classic application. Its path is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. - Right-click on the application. Then, select Pin to Start.
- Search for the application using the search bar. Select Open file location.
Note: Since the program is pinned to the start menu, the file location is the newly added start menu shortcut.
- Select the shortcut. Then, select Copy path.
- Paste the copied path in a text file for later use. In this example, the shortcut path is
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows Media Player.lnk. - In SOTI MobiControl, navigate to Profiles > New Profile > Modern Desktop.
- Give the profile a descriptive name and proceed to the Configurations tab.
- Select (+) Add > Kiosk Mode (2) > Multi-App Kiosk Mode to add the Multi-App Kiosk configuration.
- Select (+) Add to add users or groups. Select an Account Type. In this example, the profile is assigned to a local user named LocalUser. Then, navigate to the Home Screen tab.
- Select (+) Add in the Custom Applications section to add a custom application. Set the application type as Classic and provide an Application Name followed by its program path copied earlier.
- Scroll down to the Start Menu section and select (+) Add to add a Start Menu item.
- Select (+) Add in the Group Name section and give the new group a name.
- Select Application Tile as the Menu Item Type. Then, select the application from the Application dropdown. Toggle on Link Path in the Application Options and paste the shortcut path copied earlier.
- Specify a Tile Size and a Tile Position. Then, select Ok and Save.
- Save and assign the profile to your Windows Modern devices.
Verification and Validation
After the Windows Modern device reboots, the Custom Classic Application appears within the kiosk group with the specified tile size and position.
