Distribution point for MobiControl Device Agent?

Hello,

is it possible to install/configure some form of distribution point/server where devices can download files, device agents etc. from a local machine in the network?

I keep having bandwith problems when trying to update the device agents on a couple number of devices which are connected to my MobiControl installation in our head office. Sometimes I get lucky and the agent gets pushed to the device and installed successfully but most of the time it seems like packet loss is causing the agent download to fail.

The devices are ZEBRA MK4000 running Windows/CE 5.0 | Device Agent: 14.1.8.1070

MobiControl Version: 14.2.1.4394

Hi Michael,

Currently distribution point/server where devices can download files is not available. All agent are stored in the MobiControl Deployment server. Deployment server check for the agent specific information in Database and then DS send upgraded version of MobiControl agent. If the deployment server is working fine and doesn't have any performance related issue then the agent should be pushed to device as long as its has connectivity with MobiControl server. I can also suggest to make changes to Agent upgrade settings therefore all the device to download a newer version of MobiControl agent dependent on the network. Below is the link for Agent upgrade setting https://www.soti.net/mc/help/v14.1/en/console/gsrindex.html?gsrid=reference/dialogs/devicesettings/agentupgradesettings.html

I also wanted to know when do the device agents get updated when they are on wifi or cellular data ?

Hi ASMOD,

Thank you for your reply!

The devices are connected via LAN. (Wall mounted terminals with a scanner for customers)

I know that talking about packet loss on devices which are connected via LAN sounds a bit "unusual" but I've tested this myself by driving out to the stores where these devices are installed and copied the .CAB-file for the device agent over the local network. It worked and the Agent got installed successfully after a coldboot.

These devices only have a small amount of RAM to work with, maybe thats causing problems when MobiControl is pushing the files for the new agent down to the device and tries to install them.

So far I haven't been able to update the Agent on all of my MK4000 devices via the "normal" way in the webconsole.

Sometimes I got lucky and was able to get the .CAB-file onto the device after establishing a remote control session with the devices and copying the file via the command line from my local PC to the device.

Am I the first person thats asking for distribution points? Or is the common way to install multiple Deployment Servers?

No, only the MK4000 devices have trouble with the device agent upgrade.
