MC lockdown screen steals focus from user: Android+/Samsung

I have a very weird issue with SOTI lockdown:

Samsung J3 devices, Lock-down screen steals focus away from active user many times.

meaning whatever the user is doing on the phone, the screen flips back to the main lock-down screen.

The user can be texting, emailing, or using an approved app from the lock-down screen.

This behavior makes the phone basically unusable.

The user can return to the screen they were using and continue to try to complete the task (say trying to complete and send a text message), only to have the focused stolen again by the lock-down screen. If the user is lucky, they can complete a task quickly. Though sometimes, having to try many many times to get something done.

It appears to happen @ every ten minutes randomly, however - when it does - it can steal the focus away from user 10-14 times in a row. I have seen the logs contain multiple entries (10-14) in the same time-frame (H:M:S) like:

7:02:02 AM   Information       Custom log       (The device has been switched to User mode)

1-14 times in a row., different days, different times.

I also see multiple (1-2) same-day log entries for:

Information      Custom log       (Samsung ELM License successfully activated)

other info
      OS Version      8.0.0
   Agent Version      13.6.0.1476

This issue was reported to SOTI in 2016/2017 and I sent them @ 3GB of 'logs' over 8 different troubleshooting tests, the only option offered was - we are updating the agent. We now are 8 Agent versions past this first report, the issue is actually worse than ever.

I use:
Feature Controls: Block Tether/ add new accounts
Phone Calls: to block International and 900
Application Run Control: Blacklist numerous 'sharing sub screens (to prevent user for sharing to online services)
   Lock-down : 8 apps available - (I recently changed speed-lock to 90 seconds vs 10 seconds for kickoff.)
I desperately hope this is what is kicking user out of active screens
   Settings Manager: allow all
SotiSurf: with settings to limit sites allowed
   File Encryption: for HIPAA compliance.
and Authentication: to enforce expiring pins

My Rules, data collection and data-com collection every day at 9A

It sounds like another application that is not White listed is temporarily taking focus and then the activity suppression of the Lockdown is sending the user to the main home/lockdown screen. I would suggest observing the logcat output of the device while reproducing the issue to see if some other application or service is running when the event occurs.

Worth a shot. I'll check it out.

Thanks

If the problem has been reported since 2016/17 and still persists for many versions of device agents,  maybe the problem is in the Samsung J3 firmware.  Have you made any firmware upgrade(s) in these 2-3 years?

What speed threshold and engage/disengage timer value did you set for your speed kiosk?  Did you add any script when speed kisok is applied/removed?    I suggest you to totally remove the speed kiosk to debug if your problem stems from it.

Also, have you tried allowing status/notification bar, and see if there is any notification related to ELM license/user-mode etc. that warns you of any improper set-up  not yet done, but partially hidden by your kiosk from time to time?

Finally, have you check if there is enough free memory on your device?

Were you able to ever find a solution to this? I am having a similar issue with a number of Zebra TC8000 scanners. They are constantly switching to User mode thus taking focus away from the app the users are working in. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Nathan, no. SOTI just said that Samsung knows of the problem, but that there is no development on our Android version for this issue and they are not going to fix it.

SOTI said, replace device.   :(

Typical vendor finger-pointing. By the way, I had spent weeks of trouble tickets and re-work before I got this non-answer as to why the lockdown kiosk steals focus from an actively typing user. Way too much time wasted.

I did find that changing reporting/data collection/connection times to only every 4-8 hours helped reduce the issue, but it still happens and still infuriates my users. This had the negative result for me that I no longer can use the location tracking capability as the device is not connected to control panel during office hours. It also created and issue where my frustrated users are performing certain functions on a different device outside of our control. Kind of defeats the purpose.  :(

  • I keep hoping SOTI would reprogram and allow speed-based profile application without us having to rely on the "lockdown" kiosk. I would certainly find it easier to just apply a different profile (even uhh.. maybe the "speed lock kiosk") until the device is stopped. User acceptance would be dramatically higher as kiosk-ing the user is never popular.

  • I wish they had/would enact a "Bypass" button on the "Speed Control Kiosk" to allow "Passengers" to attest they are not driving and the device switches back to normal lockdown kiosk.

These limitations and flaws (stealing focus from user) are what has kept me from adding our 300+ other users to my current 40 SOTI controlled devices.

  • I am now just waiting for other MDM vendors to institute "speed-based" locking (profile application) and I will ditch SOTI. However, even most recently, I touched base with a handful of MDM vendors and it is a no-go on speed based profiles.
  • I have looked briefly at maybe trying some "Parental Control" apps to achieve the "no use while driving" along with SOTI profile to remove unwanted apps (yay, no SOTI Lockdown headaches)  - unfortunately there are no enterprise level controls on these apps. still - I hope to revisit the concept next year (to bring on the 300+ devices).

Hopefully I will win the lottery before I am forced into Android for Work or some other crud.

Good luck.. S

Thank you for the information Shawn. This is an extremely annoying issue. However, the workaround I discovered is to simply not use the SOTI lockdown feature and instead use Zebra Enterprise Home Screen; which performs the same restriction features as SOTI. Even though the scanner logs still show that the agent is constantly switching to User mode at least it's not taking focus away from the running app anymore.

Hi Shawn,

Would you mind sharing what values you set for those advanced parameters (i.e. speed, engage/disengage timers, and any scripts, etc.)  related to the speed kiosk in your problematic devices?

We had the same issue Shawn.  From all of the troubleshooting we did, the end result was us using Enterprise Home Screen.

No Status bar options used (not disabled)

Active 12:00AM to 11:45PM, no scripts for speed control applied or removed

Start 20mph, 90sec engage, 60sec disengage

Only connecting devices first 15 minutes of each hour.

devices had have focus stolen every 10 minutes, and when t happens - can steal focus four times or more before user can complete one text.  The stealing happens while NOT at speed. User can be sitting in a chair in the office.
