Attempting to enroll Zebra MC9300 scanner using the QR Code but the QR screen is not showing up

Solved

Customers created a QR code enrollment and sent them to the end user.

They then requested the user to enroll the device but they reported that the usercan't scan the QR code.

The user said that after tapping the welcome screens 7 times, the QR Code screen is not showing up on the device itself.

Details of the device are below:

Make and Model: Zebra MC9300

Android version: 10

MobiControl version: 2024.1.2

The customer normally deliver one brand new Zebra MC9300 together with the SOTI enrollment QR code to the end user.

User will then open the box, scan the QR code and the device will be enrolled automatically.

I already advised the customer to refer to the article below from Zebra but they said the users are not technical hence they have difficulty connecting to Wi Fi or Internet by themselves.

https://supportcommunity.zebra.com/s/article/SPR-40429-PS20-BASE-Non-Camera-SKU-and-QR-Enrollment-method-with-MX-10?language=en_US

That's the reason why they must use QR code to enroll the device.

Can someone assist me if there is still a way to enroll the device using QR Code? Is there something that needs to be enabled from Zebra?

The QR based enrollment method accessed through the Google Setup Wizard was built with an assumption that most devices have a camera. It therefore relies on camera based scanning to decode the QR code. Even though your MC9300 has a very powerful built in imager which should be more than sufficient to scan a QR code, the QR code enrollment process won’t work without a camera. You probably don’t have a premium SKU of the MC9300 optioned with a camera. You’ll have to use a different enrollment mechanism like StageNow instead. At least with StageNow you can leverage the built in scanner.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your response. I believe enrolling the device using StageNow is out of option for now as the user is not tech savvy.

Also, what is premium SKU? Sorry to ask as I'm relatively new in MDM technology here.

I just noticed you already linked the Zebra article covering this problem so you are likely already aware of the issue stemming from the lack of camera on the device. It sounds like you have multiple options available to you so I’m not sure where the problem lies.

  • Option 1: scan AE QR code with built in scanner directly from the start of the SUW
  • Option 2: scan StageNow barcodes to connect to WiFi and download SOTI agent and enroll.

I am not sure if I can help you help your customer understand how to connect to WiFi. That is a more foundational concept not necessarily SOTI specific.

I am also confused who you are in this relationship with the end user. Are you their technical support? Their reseller? I’m confused how you could end up in this position on this forum.

The documentation for the MC9X series is incorrect, or outdated, on the Zebra website and their support sites.  When the MC9300 resets and goes to the welcome screen (Hi There), do not tap or hit start, stay on that screen.  There is a 60 Second time delay from the time the screen opens and when the scanner starts working.  After the time delay, you can scan the enrollment code by pulling the trigger,no need for a camera.
