Mobicontrol Second deployment server

Hello MObicontrol experts

I want to have a second deployment server

I have two servers  but using the same registration code, now Soti Support told me that I cannot do that, even when the recommended it.

Anyway

In one server (old) I am running mobicontrol version 13.2.03345 version, this old server is managing scanners with windows mobile.

My second server (new) its running mobicontrol with version 15.3.0.6711, since I am having issues with my license, I want to migrate the old server into the new one, the idea is to move the old deployment server into the new one

In the Mobicontrol Admin tool I can see that I have the chance to add a second IP address there, do you know if adding the old server IP address would do the magic?

I really do not think so but I want to ask

Thanks for your kind answers!

Hi Aldo,

that Sounds like that you have two Licenses ?

I have 2 Deployment Servers  with one Licese.

Frist Server with the SQL DB is with SHA2 for the Android Devices and the Second is with SHA1 Certificate for the Windows CE/WM Devices. Both Servers must have the Same installed Version from MobiControl.

the Second Server is in the Background connected to the First Server Database.

That they are having the Same Data Source.

I recommand to get to the last 15.3.2 Version there are many Bug fixed included when you like to use 15.3.*

Thank you Marcus for your answer!

It sounds like I have two licenses, but no, somehow it is working two servers with one license.

The issue is that I tried to upgrade the old server and I could not. I also requested support from SOTI but they could either.

Now I am thinking in a third option. start from zero the windows CE configurations in the new server and manually install new clients in the devices. its gonna be a difficult task but I think it could work.

What do you think ?

Hi Aldo,

thanks for your Answers.

Has each of the Servers his owen SQL Database or in the Background 1 SQL DB together ?

If you like to Upgrade from 13.2 to 15.3.* you must upgrade what i know in Stages.

That is here a bit more details in the Soti Help what to do to Upgrade:

https://www.soti.net/mc/help/v15.3/en/setup/upgrading/upgrade.html (Included System Requirements)

Hello Marcus

Yes we have 2 separate DB, one for windows mobile and one for android devices.

I followed the path to upgrade the old server but always received an error, SOTI support tried as well but no luck.

That is why we ended with 2 separate servers.

Hi Aldo,

then i think it is a good Idea to create an new Deployment Server with SHA1  Certificates and link them during installing to the SQL DB on the other Server with the installtion V15.3.0*.

Recommand an Upgrade to 15.3.2 there are many Bug Fixes installd :D

You will need there may the Professional service that they are gaving you a Temporary License and a Script to Move the Windows CE/WM devices to the new SHA1 Server.

Or may Raymond Chan or Matt Dermody have an Better Idea ;)

Hi Aldo,

You seem to be unsure whether you have one or two databases, and whether you are using one or two server reg-code/license(s). I don't know the number and varietry of enrolled devices you have in your implementation, or whether your MDM conrol is mission critical.  You would be very lucky to have all enrolled devices remain in full control if you make arbitrary server changes without knowing sufficiently what and how you do.

If you are using a single license reg-code for an HA with two deployment servers of different version/build numbers, you risk having some of your database data corrupted that might cause problem(s) that are not noticeable maybe until a few months/years later.

With your very vague, contradictory and patchy descriptions, it would be irresponsible for me to give you any input.   My company and I charged corporate customers for such services as we take these services seriously, especially for mission critical implementation that cannot afford loss of control of existing devices.   I don't exactly know what steps you took and how you did the,    You might have already messed up something, and debugging/diagnosing can take substantial time and effort.  Hence, I suggest you to contact Soti support/professional services team to look into what steps to take to fix or limit the scope of the damage(s).

Hi Raymond, thanks for your reply

I will try to clarify more the info....

I can confirm that I have 2 databases
Registration code, I am using only one, SOTI support and account manager gave me 1 license for two servers.
Only 2 type of enrolled devices, Windows CE and Android 8, 9 version
I haven't messed something, all the configurations were done with the Support of SOTI and also from Professional services.

I already contacted Soti Support and they suggested to add a second deployment server to the newer server. That is why I opened this post, but seems that is not easy as I thought.

Anyway I thank you your reply and I will continue checking my possibilities to fix the issue that the support of Soti created.

It's good that you actually have two servers using two separate MobiControl databases.  The chances of database data corruption I mentioned earlier should not be applicable.

However, in your case, your discussion title mentioning about a "Second" Deployment Server become misleading.   While it is technically possible to use the same reg-code/license key to activate more than one MobiControl implemenation (with Soti support team MANUALLY resetting your reg-code when activating an additional implementation), the normal practices is to use a multi-DS reg-code/license key for a single HA implementation for the number of DS servers allowed, as usual activation of a reg-code will also record the associated Microsoft server SSID and MobiControl server version/build numbers .   Maybe Soti support team wants to help you evenually migrate your system in steps to an HA system with one server managing the older Windows Mobile devices and another one managing devices of other platforms.  As Soti's team is involved in the process, you should be in good hands, and there shouldn't be any need for you to post a discussion thread here in the first place.
